FAQ

Managed IT for law firms questions

What does managed IT for a law firm include?

Helpdesk for attorneys and staff, monitoring and patching, endpoint security, encrypted email, backup, secure remote access and network management. Higher tiers add 24/7 security monitoring, vCISO time and documentation for client security questionnaires and cyber insurance.

What security do ethics rules require of law firms?

Attorneys must make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized access to client information. In California that duty comes from Business and Professions Code section 6068(e) and Rule of Professional Conduct 1.6, and the ABA's Model Rules and formal opinions on securing client communications point the same way. In practice that means MFA, encryption, secure remote access, backup and staff training.

Do you support our practice management and document systems?

We support the infrastructure around them, such as the network, workstations, identity, security and backup, for systems like Clio, NetDocuments, iManage, Worldox and Microsoft 365. Application setup and support stays with the software vendor.

Can you help with client security questionnaires?

Yes. Corporate and institutional clients increasingly send security questionnaires before engaging outside counsel. We document your controls so you can answer them accurately, and keep that documentation current.

How much does managed IT cost for a law firm?

Most firms pay $150 to $225 per user per month for the Standard tier, which covers the security tools most cyber insurers and corporate clients expect. A 20-person firm usually pays about $3,000 to $4,500 a month. See managed IT cost per user.

What happens if a firm has a breach?

We contain the incident, restore systems from backup and help preserve the evidence your counsel and insurer need. ABA Formal Opinion 483 also says lawyers may need to notify affected clients, so a written incident response plan matters before anything happens.
