Managed IT for Engineering Firms
the model is the deliverable. It doesn't compress well.
A/E IT across SoCal — civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, transportation, multidisciplinary practices. AutoCAD. Revit. Navisworks. Bluebeam. BIM 360. Bentley. Rhino. High-perf workstations. Large-file collaboration. Project-based ops.
Managed IT for engineering firms — the models are massive, the deadlines are fixed, the workstations have to keep up
Architecture and engineering IT operates on two axes commercial IT does not: file sizes that break most collaboration platforms (a single Revit model can hit 5-15GB), and workstation performance requirements that force high-end hardware refresh every 3-4 years. Autodesk maintains official Revit system requirements as the baseline reference.
The scope: design platform operations (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam, BIM 360, ArchiCAD, Bentley MicroStation, Rhino, SketchUp), high-performance workstation lifecycle management, large-file collaboration infrastructure (Panzura, Egnyte, Nasuni, Autodesk Docs), project-based access provisioning for consultants and JV partners, and ITAR / CUI compliance where projects require.
Pairs with managed services for core operations, cybersecurity for project data protection, collaboration for JV and consultant coordination, and ITAR compliance for defense-adjacent projects. Start with a free assessment.
Three patterns that slow the design team
Generic IT works for the accounting team. It fails the design team predictably.
File collaboration is unusable
Standard cloud file sync (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox) breaks on multi-GB Revit files, versioned CAD reference chains, and real-time BIM collaboration. Designers work off local copies, reconcile manually, and lose hours to sync conflicts. Panzura, Egnyte, Nasuni, or Autodesk Docs are what the workflow actually needs.
Workstations are underspec'd
The IT team spec'd a business laptop. The designer opens a large Revit model and waits 45 seconds per view rotation. Multiplied across every design decision, the year loses hundreds of billable hours to hardware. Proper design workstation spec (GPU, RAM, NVMe) is the ROI, not the expense.
Consultant access takes a week to provision
A JV partner needs access to project files. The IT team creates an AD account, adds them to groups, gets M365 licensed, sets up MFA, and shares the folder tree. A week passes. The consultant's deliverable was due Friday. Project-based access provisioning workflow shortens this to hours.
Why choose WCC for managed IT for engineering firms
A/E IT is design platform operations + workstation lifecycle + large-file collaboration + project-based access + regulatory compliance. WCC handles all five.

High-Perf Workstation Ops
Design workstation specification, lifecycle management, and GPU / RAM / NVMe refresh planning. HP Z, Dell Precision, Lenovo ThinkStation, and Boxx workstation classes. Warranty and imaging.
Large-File Collaboration
Panzura, Egnyte, Nasuni, Autodesk Docs deployment and operations. Multi-office file synchronization. Version management. Revit central file / worksharing infrastructure.
Project-Based Provisioning
Project-based access provisioning for consultants, JV partners, subs. Time-bounded credentials. Per-project folder structure. Automated de-provisioning at project close.
ITAR + CUI Handling
ITAR-controlled project handling with segregated enclaves. CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information) infrastructure for federal projects. NIST 800-171 alignment. DFARS clause compliance.
Project-Aware Backup
Backup strategy aligned to project lifecycle. Project-close archival to long-term storage. Legal-hold-aware retention for litigation-adjacent projects. Documented restore testing.
Managed IT for engineering firms — common questions
Design platform operations (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam, BIM 360, Bentley, Rhino, ArchiCAD), high-performance workstation lifecycle, large-file collaboration infrastructure (Panzura, Egnyte, Nasuni, Autodesk Docs), project-based access provisioning for consultants and JV partners, ITAR / CUI compliance where projects require, and project-aware backup and archival. Plus standard managed IT.
Depends on the design work. 2D CAD and light BIM: 32GB RAM, mid-tier GPU (RTX A2000 or T1000), NVMe SSD, decent i7 or Ryzen 7. Heavy BIM and 3D modeling: 64-128GB RAM, RTX A4000 or A5000, NVMe RAID, i9 or Xeon workstation-class CPU. Rendering workstations: 128GB+ RAM, RTX A6000 or dual-GPU, i9 / Threadripper. WCC scopes per discipline and workload.
Two patterns. Pattern one: Autodesk Docs / BIM 360 as the collaboration platform, with Revit workshared central files, integrated version management, and Autodesk Construction Cloud integration. Pattern two: Panzura, Egnyte, or Nasuni as a global file system, with local caching at each office and synchronization in the background. Selection depends on cloud-first vs. on-prem posture, multi-office structure, and cost model.
ITAR-controlled project data requires segregated enclaves with US-person-only access controls, US-only cloud regions or on-prem infrastructure, encryption at rest and in transit, and documented access logging. CUI handling under NIST 800-171 adds specific control families around access, audit, and configuration management. WCC scopes ITAR / CUI enclaves at project start when the classification is known.
Project-based access provisioning workflow. Consultant or JV partner submits access request. WCC provisions time-bounded credentials scoped to the specific project folder structure, applies MFA, and documents the access grant. Access auto-expires at project close (or on defined milestones). Off-boarding is deterministic instead of manual. Speeds provisioning from a week to hours.
Small firm (under 20 designers): $175-300 per user per month all-in including workstation lifecycle and design platform ops. Mid-size firm (20-100 designers): $200-350 per user per month plus large-file collaboration infrastructure. Large firm (100+ designers, multi-office): $225-425 per user per month plus dedicated compliance operations for ITAR / CUI projects. Workstation refresh capital budget separate.
