ERRCS Annual Testing
the fire marshal comes back every year. So does the test report.
NFPA 1221/1225 inspection, grid measurement, BDA gain verification, battery backup load test, FACP supervision check, AHJ-formatted reporting. Service contract or one-time. Originally installed by anyone — WCC tests it.
ERRCS annual testing — the AHJ wants the report and the failed components fixed
ERRCS annual testing is the NFPA 1221 / 1225 inspection cycle that keeps a public safety radio system valid. NFPA 1221 requires annual functional testing; IFC Section 510 reinforces the AHJ's authority to enforce it. Failed tests get remediated or the AHJ can pull occupancy. Annual testing belongs on contract, not on an internal calendar that nobody checked.
The annual visit: grid measurement on all required floors and stairwells with calibrated test equipment, BDA gain and noise floor verification, donor antenna re-verification, filter and band-pass calibration check, battery backup 12-hour or 24-hour load test, FACP supervision integration verification, and a written report formatted for AHJ submission. Failed components get scoped for remediation. The next year starts on the calendar.

Three reasons the test cycle has to happen
NFPA 1221 / 1225 makes annual testing a code requirement. The AHJ has real authority to act on a failed cycle.
AHJ occupancy revocation is on the table
A failed annual inspection, an uncorrected deficiency, or a missed test cycle gives the AHJ grounds to revoke occupancy or refuse a renewal. The Certificate of Occupancy that gated the original install gates the ongoing operation, too. The fire marshal keeps records.
Battery backup fails silently
Sealed lead-acid and lithium battery backups for ERRCS systems degrade over 3-7 years depending on chemistry and environment. The system runs fine on building power. The 12-hour load test is the only thing that catches a battery before the emergency that actually needs it.
BDA drift shows up in grid measurement
Bidirectional amplifier gain drifts over time. Donor antenna alignment shifts with building settling and roof work. The grid measurement on annual test catches both before they cause a real coverage gap. Without the measurement, the system reports "online" and covers nothing.
Why choose WCC for public safety DAS testing
Annual testing is a discipline as much as a service. WCC has the calibrated equipment, the AHJ relationships, and the C-7 license to test, document, and remediate as one workflow.
CSLB C-7 · C-10 · C-28
Active California contractor license. Permits pulled for any remediation work the test report identifies. Testing and fix on one license stack.
Code-fluent inspection
Test procedure aligned to NFPA 1221 / 1225 and IFC Section 510. Calibrated test equipment. Documented methodology. AHJ submission package.
SOLiD · Comba · JMA · Westell
WCC tests systems installed by any vendor. SOLiD ALLIANCE, Comba CriticalPoint, JMA Wireless Teko, Westell Class B BDA, and others.
Annual + 5-Year Recert
Annual service contract plus 5-year recertification visit scheduled in advance. Predictable budget. Predictable AHJ submission timing.
The six items on the test visit checklist
Each item is required by code or AHJ convention. Each item lands in the written report.
Grid Signal Measurement
Calibrated handheld measurement on the required floor and stairwell grid. Inbound and outbound. Signal level documented to AHJ-acceptable methodology. Failed squares get scoped for remediation.
BDA Gain + Noise Floor
Bidirectional amplifier gain verified across all bands. Noise floor measurement. Filter and band-pass calibration check. Output power within AHJ tolerance. Drift documented year-over-year.
Donor Antenna Re-Verification
Donor antenna pointing and signal margin verified against year-zero baseline. Roof work, settling, and equipment changes nearby can shift alignment. The verification catches it before the grid measurement does.
12-Hour or 24-Hour Load Test
AHJ-required battery backup load test at full system load. 12-hour minimum per NFPA 1221, 24-hour per stricter local codes. Battery condition documented. Replacement scoping where degradation indicates.
NFPA 72 Supervision Check
Fire alarm panel supervision integration verified. ERRCS battery, BDA status, and trouble signals reaching the FACP correctly. Annunciation tested. Cross-checked with the fire alarm service report.
AHJ-Formatted Test Report
Written report formatted for AHJ submission. Signal level documentation by floor and stairwell. BDA gain measurements. Battery condition. Supervision check results. Deficiency list with remediation scope.
ERRCS annual testing — common questions
The NFPA 1221 / 1225 annual inspection scope: grid signal measurement on all required floors and stairwells (inbound and outbound), BDA gain and noise floor verification across all installed bands, donor antenna re-verification, filter and band-pass calibration check, battery backup load test (12 or 24 hour per AHJ), FACP supervision integration verification, and a written report formatted for AHJ submission. Failed components get scoped for remediation.
Yes — WCC tests ERRCS systems regardless of who installed them. The test methodology is vendor-agnostic. SOLiD ALLIANCE, Comba CriticalPoint, JMA Wireless Teko, Westell, and others all get the same NFPA 1221 / 1225 test scope. WCC documents the existing system, identifies as-built drift from the original install, and produces the AHJ-formatted report. If remediation is needed, WCC scopes it under the C-7 license.
Failed components get itemized in the test report with remediation scope. Common failures: drifted BDA gain (recalibration), failed battery backup (replacement), donor antenna alignment loss (re-pointing), filter degradation (replacement), and FACP supervision faults (cable or panel programming). WCC can perform remediation under the same C-7 license and re-test, or the customer can use another contractor. The AHJ typically grants 30-90 days to correct.
Some AHJs require a more extensive 5-year recertification on top of the annual inspection. The 5-year visit typically adds: full equipment commissioning re-verification, updated as-built drawings, comprehensive battery backup testing with documented capacity, donor antenna re-survey, and AHJ pre-coordination meeting. WCC schedules the 5-year visit in advance and rolls the annual report into the recertification package.
WCC retains the AHJ-formatted test reports indefinitely and produces them on request — for AHJ inspection, insurance carrier audit, building sale due diligence, or fire marshal follow-up. The retention is part of the service contract. Customers also receive a copy at the time of the visit. Year-over-year drift tracking is documented in the cumulative service file.
Scales with building geometry, frequency band count, and access logistics. Small single-story commercial: $2,500-5,500 per annual visit. Mid-size school or commercial mixed-use: $5,500-15,000. Multi-building campus or hospital complex: $15,000-50,000+. 5-year recertification typically runs 1.5-2x the annual visit cost. Annual service contract structure available with predictable monthly or quarterly billing. WCC quotes after a documentation review.
