Campus technology for colleges and universities
High-density Wi-Fi, fiber backbone, cameras, access control and lecture hall AV for public and private campuses.
Updated October 2026 · CSLB #819788, C-7, C-10, C-28
The short answer
WCC installs campus technology for colleges and universities across Southern California: high-density Wi-Fi, structured cabling and fiber backbone, switching, security cameras, access control and lecture hall AV. Public campuses can buy through our CMAS contract; private colleges work with us directly.
Campus realities
What makes campus projects hard
Campuses never fully close
Summer sessions, research and housing mean work windows have to be negotiated building by building.
Density
A 500-seat lecture hall needs a different Wi-Fi design than an office floor.
Old and new buildings
Historic buildings with limited pathways sit next to new construction.
Safety expectations
Clery Act reporting and board attention put cameras and building access in focus.
Many stakeholders
IT, facilities, public safety, academic leadership and purchasing all weigh in.
Procurement paths
Public campuses need a compliant vehicle; private campuses run their own process.
What we install
Campus technology we install
| System | Typical scope |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Survey-designed coverage for lecture halls, libraries, unions, housing and outdoor quads |
| Cabling and fiber | Cat6 and Cat6A in buildings, single-mode and multimode fiber between them, tested and labeled |
| Switching | Closet and core standards that repeat across buildings |
| Security cameras | Entries, parking structures, walkways and athletics, with central management |
| Access control | Building entries, labs, server rooms and research spaces, with lockdown where needed |
| Lecture hall AV | Displays, projection, sound and lecture capture, coordinated with IT |
Wi-Fi
Designing Wi-Fi for lecture halls
Lecture halls, libraries and student unions put hundreds of devices in one room at once. We design those spaces with Ekahau surveys, plan capacity per seat rather than per square foot, place access points to cover the seating rather than the ceiling grid, and validate performance after installation. See Ekahau site surveys and the best commercial Wi-Fi guide.
Procurement
How colleges buy from WCC
| Institution | Typical path |
|---|---|
| CSU and UC campuses | CMAS, or the campus's own bid process |
| Community college districts | CMAS, OMNIA Partners where used, or a district bid |
| Private colleges and universities | Direct proposal and contract |
We're DIR registered with certified payroll for prevailing wage work. See CMAS IT services.
How it works
How a campus project runs
Align stakeholders
Walk buildings with IT, facilities and public safety, and agree on standards and work windows.
Planning
Design and phase
Campus standards and a building-by-building schedule tied to the academic calendar.
Design
Install and document
Installation, testing and as-builts that campus IT can maintain for years.
Delivery
After turnover
Support after the project
Many campuses want help after go-live: moves and changes, closet clean-up, Wi-Fi tuning or managed services for specific buildings. See managed IT for higher education.
Research and labs
Labs, research buildings and housing
Research labs
Separate networks for instruments, badge access with audit logs, and cabling planned around casework and benches.
Residence halls
Room-by-room Wi-Fi coverage, door access for entries and common areas, and cameras at entrances and lobbies.
Athletics and events
High-density Wi-Fi for venues, camera coverage of parking and gates, and temporary event support.
Cost
Typical pricing
| Item | Typical installed range |

| Wi-Fi access point | $800–$2,000 each |
| Cat6A data drop | $225–$500 per drop |
| Fiber between buildings | $20,000–$100,000+ per campus project |
| Security camera | $900–$3,000 each |
| Access-controlled door | $1,500–$4,500 per door |
| Lecture hall AV | $30,000–$75,000+ per room |
FAQ
Campus technology questions
Can colleges buy from WCC through CMAS?
Yes. California public colleges and universities, including CSU campuses and community college districts, can buy through WCC's CMAS contract, subject to their own policies.
Do you work with private colleges?
Yes. Private colleges and universities contract with WCC directly.
Can you design Wi-Fi for large lecture halls?
Yes. We design dense spaces with Ekahau surveys, plan capacity per seat and validate performance after installation.
Do you install campus security systems?
Yes. Cameras and access control for entries, parking, walkways, labs and athletics, managed centrally and designed with Clery Act reporting in mind.
Can you work while classes are in session?
Yes. We phase work building by building around the academic calendar, using breaks, evenings and weekends for disruptive work.
Is WCC DIR registered?
Yes. WCC is DIR registered and handles certified payroll for prevailing wage campus projects.
